Freemantle aka Freo

Last saturday, we went for a walk towards Freemantle, at 30 minutes from Perth by train. (a little less than 20 km). It’s a quite artistic town, which have kept the colonial architecture and whose Round House and jail are part of the most ancient monuments of Western Australia.

Pleasant walk under the sun in the small streets of Freo. In the Didgeridoo shops (the most famous aborigene instrument), we are shown how to use them. Not easy!! You have to blow in the Eucalyptus tubes and let your lips shake slightly as if you were bored or unhappy. We are also told that the hole in the tube has been digged by ants! Very impressive when you see the size of few of those instruments!

We went round the E-Shed Markets surrounding the harbor. There, anything can be found: food, souvenirs, arts and crafts … we bought a few souvenirs, cheaper than in Perth! We found trinkets that we saw in Malaysia as well. Speaking with the traders, we discovered that the majority of the products are actually from Indonesia.

We also visited a small part of the Fremantle jail (let’s say the museum rather! To really get in the jail, we would have had to pay a quite expensive tour).

At 1pm, we witnessed a gun fire (which exploded our eardrums…) and had a picnic in a square with the seagulls.

End of the afternoon: we headed for south beach. Too windy once again. We still haven’t swim since we’re here!

On the way back home, We went to a restaurant (we didn’t cook that night, yeaaaaaaaah). Expensive, but so good!!
